Some Nostalgia To Get Us In The Mood

Ireland play the Czech Republic tomorrow night in Dublin. I will be in attendance and will mostly likely post some pictures and a response before the week closes out. Seeing the boys play will no doubt only increase my excitement for the tournament this June so I feel it's appropriate that while I do so much looking forward we should also do a bit of looking back.

One of Ireland's greatest achievements was reaching the quarter finals of the World Cup in Italy all the way back in 1990.

Now, to get to the quarter final, we first had to get past Romania. I was 6 years old at the time yet this match is still a vivid memory mostly due to the fact that it went to penalties. And penalties are the tensest, most nerve wracking thing a football fan can live through. My 6 year old brain was fried.

You can see the full penalty shoot-out here. It's about 20 minutes long and is followed up by a short interview with the great Jack Charlton (our manager at the time). Watching it in full will give you an idea of the tension I'm talking about but if you're short on time you can see a highlight video below.

Packie Bonner: Legend.

Now, if you want an idea of how gripped in World Cup fever the country was at this time, the following is a great video taken directly after this match. The location is Walkinstown, Dublin and isn't by a sports club or anything. it's just outside a couple of pubs in a Dublin suburb.

Check out the Occupy-The-Roundabout movement we had. I love every second of this.

That's Ireland. That's how we felt about football. That is how we felt about our country. And I hope we can relive it again this summer.

Fantastic Parking

I've been meaning to post this for a while. My wonderful friend JJ sent this to me from Portland, Oregon.

I always thought the Fantastic Four were based in New York, but maybe that has been a ruse all along.

Cabin Fever 107: Dead Becomes Her

Oh yeah, we're getting into the swing of things now. For our 4th episode since my triumphant arrival we try to wrap our heads around the Grammys, Chris Brown (although we'd probably rather wrap our fists around his head), Katy Perry, Valentine's Day, The Walking Dead, and much more.

All the while myself and Brian are watching this in the background:

Tease Me, Baby! – Iron Sky

NOTE: This article was originally published by me on TheWebsiteOfDOOM.com

I was completely unaware of Iron Sky until I stumbled across this trailer yesterday but apparently this has had a Snakes On A Plane-like fan expectation online for a number of years. In fact if you go to the official website you'll see that this crazy B-movie style film has been a real passion project from start to finish.

The premise is that the Nazis have been hiding on the moon for 70 years and decided to finally come to earth to mess up our day and bring a whole bunch of psycho. It's a delightfully nutty plot and has "fun" written all over it. I'm sure "Nazis from Outer Space" was the tagline that got a lot of people interested. In fact, I'm a little dissapointed it's not the movie's title.

Iron Sky will be on limited release but you can demand it for your area on their website. Is it worth doing so? Well, check out the trailer and see.

So... uh... yeah...

The Adventure Club Podcast: Aaron Sequence

I was invited by the enigmatic Guy Hutchinson to join him and the infamous John J on The Adventure Club podcast this week. It was an honour and a priveledge... for them. I'm kind of a big deal you know.

I had a lovely chat with the guys covering lots of weirdness such as Sheamus, Dustin the Turkey and Santa Claus. Somehow they all connect. To find out, just listen.

The Unique Geek - Not Issue 100: Is That An Arrow In Your Quiver?

Recorded last week with Jon Boutelle, Serv, and with a cameo appearance by Rox of Spazhouse, I (for only the second time in my life) guest on The Unique Geek's podcast. And wouldn't you know it, it's their 100th. Except, not really.

Yes, apparently, I wasn't good enough for their 100th episode. So while this may be the 100th they put out, they're not going to celebrate it like you would any milestone. No, they'll wait until I'm not there.

Nice guys, nice.

Anyway, this show features some movie talk. And stuff.

CABIN FEVER #106: The Pissiest Place On Earth

Sorry for the week delay on this one folks, I honestly don't understand what happened. However, I hope we make it up to you with tales of my trip to Disneyland, Paris and Brian's summer excursion in New York last year.

It's mostly a moan-fest but hopefully there will be laughs to be had throughout too.

Aaron's WWEport - Draft Me Up, Buttercup!

NOTE: This article was originally posted by me on TheWebsiteOfDOOM.com

Traditionally the WWE Draft, which decides the show and which championships the wrestlers can aim for, takes place in April. But today I am going to make a case for it to be moved up a little to fix a problem I like to call The Great Khali-een Out.

The Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event is at the end of the month and will feature the top 6 guys from each brand competing for the title. The RAW line up is pretty amazing. CM Punk, Kofi Kingston, Chris Jericho, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, and R Truth. And that doesn't even include the likes of Kane, John Cena and Alberto Del Rio who are competing in other matches or injured (in the case of Del Rio). RAW seem to have an over abundance of wrestlers who can main-event, resulting in some good wrestlers often getting over-looked week-in-week-out.

SMACKDOWN however... well, that's a different problem. Their match features Daniel Bryan, Big Show, Randy Orton, Wade Barrett, Cody Rhodes, and... sigh... The "Great" Khali. This line-up bugs me for two reasons, of which I'll get a bit specific about below.

1) Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes is a great wrestler with a bright future ahead of him. He's got all the skills he needs in abundance, he's just waiting on the right storyline and a real push to take him to the next level. As Intercontinental champion, a title he may only defend a couple times a year, he's wasted in this regard. But champion he is, so to place him in this match for the Heavyweight Championship just shows the shallow pool of talent SMACKDOWN has at the moment.

In reality, Rhodes should either drop his IC title or be having his own feud with someone for it thus defending it at this PPV. I think Rhodes and Bryan could have some incredible matches if placed in the right position so personally I'd like to see him drop the belt to one of the lower ranked guys so he can go for the big one. Whether or not that will ever happen this year remains to be seen but at the very least it points to his inclusion in this Elimination Chamber match being slightly off base.

2) Khali

Nobody likes him because he's useless.

I hate to be this blunt but it's true. Nobody is wearing a Great Khali t-shirt. Nobody buys a ticket to see the show hoping Khali will be there. He's a terrible wrestler, he doesn't speak English, every time he walks to the ring I fear that his knees will buckle at any moment. When a man's only wrestling move is to slap someone on top of their head, you have issues.

I understand that Mark Henry getting injured forced SMACKDOWN to replace him with someone, but really? Really? Really?

So what's my point? Well, I understand that Sheamus winning the Royal Rumble meant that he couldn't be involved directly in this match but even without him, SMACKDOWN needs some better talent and RAW quite franky is wasting some of theirs. With Christian and Mark Henry both on the sidelines for who knows how much longer, it's time to make a draft, or at least a few transfers.

Who should move? I have a couple suggestions.

Tease Me, Baby! - The Avengers (Superbowl Trailer)

NOTE: This article was originally posted by me on TheWebsiteOfDOOM.com

It's quite fitting that I review yesterday's TV spot for The Avengers as the first ever TMB on DOOM was for the Captain America Superbowl trailer. One year and 30 trailer reviews later and we're still excited around DOOM Towers for the Marvel superhero franchise and the movie continuity experiment is almost ready to unleash it's power punch.

It really can't be understated just how much I admire the balls on Marvel for trying this. For them to stand up and see that their characters were being mistreated by Hollywood producers was one thing, and an admirable thing at that. To do it themselves, to start their movie production wing, was not only brave but an inspired move that has worked for them immeasurably well. To try something like this, to link their characters not only by material but by having them appear in separate movies and then come together has not been done before on a scale like this. Hands down. The closest thing was seeing Michael Keaton appear as the same character in Out Of Sight and Jackie Brown. Thats it. You can't understate how cool this is!

However, the experiment hasn't proven a success just yet. It all rests on how The Avengers does. If it's a success, then Marvel can pat themselves on the back until their hand gets sore. If it fails, we're unlikely to see it's type again.

That being said, I'm frothing at the mouth to see the thing so this new trailer is... well... see for yourself.

Weekend Justice #146: Vicodin, Sterno and Toast

(More direct copying and pasting going on here)

It's Weekend Justice: the Internet's #1 audio trainwreck. It's the podcast that wants to talk about pie. And it's got this really disturbing look on its face while it talks to you. About pie. This podcast was engineered--some might say over-engineered--by experts to escort you from the work week in the most chaotic manner possible. Please note: this podcast is profane, definitely oversexed and definitely overwrought. It is wrong and unsafe. You have been warned.

This week features myself, Jon, Rox, Widge, Scott, Leigh, Serv, and Rob. With such discussions as:

  • Leigh and the euphemism rescue
  • Glitter and furries
  • Sundance bitching
  • Star Wars bitching!
  • Voodoo Doughnuts
  • Jon vs. Moonshine
  • Group Rock Lobster!
  • Rox explains why the new DC logo fails
  • Wrinkle in Time Turns 50
  • Jon vs. Faces of Death
  • Newt Gingrich wants moon women
  • Going to Mars
  • Widge's BBC question

CABIN FEVER #105: 1.2 Bitches Per Song

I'm trying to catch up as I was away the last 4 days in Paris, France. Something which I will probably tell you about a lot in the next week while posting photos and such. So in an attempt to speed up the posting-shit-I've-done process I'm going to straight up copy and paste from the podcast description.

What? We have to do this crap every week? It’s easy to forget just how much of a pain this podcasting lark is. After a brief Royal Rumble celebration, our cabin dwellers get stuck into a slew of strange stories from around the world. Along the way they discuss the poetic verse of HOVA, Craig List faux pas, The Rev’s status as a sex object in the gay community, and lots more nonsense that you have come to expect from two barely educated Irish lads. Seriously, pHitzy can’t count past the number twelve, and I’m pretty sure Aaron is just straight up illiterate.
