The Drive In Of Doom! - Popeye

This month's comic-book-movie commentary is one I'm sure you've been dying for us to do! It's 1980's finest, Popeye. Starring Mork & Mindy era Robin Williams and The Shining just-came-out-like-a-couple-months-earlier Shelley Duvall who both work their socks off despite the pretty poor material they're dealing with.

Tease Me, Baby! - X-Men: Days of Future Past (2nd Trailer)

NOTE: This article was originally published by me on TheWebsiteofDOOM.com

The new trailer for Bryan Singer's return to the X-Men universe has been released with lots of new shiny footage. Like most people with sense, I was horrified by many of the previous FOX produced X-Men films but like a good boxing story it's all about the fighter with a point to prove. The franchise fell into a shambles after Singer's departure and the Superman movie he left it to do was a flop. Perfect time for an inspirational comeback?

The Craic Was Mighty

If you happened to click my "live shows" button on the top menu there you will have noticed a large chunk of my August will be spent performing in Edinburgh. This is because I'm co-writing and performing in a show called The Craic Was Mighty for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. See, it's all very self explanatory!

But it's not just me, the show features 9 other great comedy performers from around Ireland (although one of those is an English lad, don't tell anyone) and will be 60 minutes of comedy about the history of Ireland.

I'm sure I'll be blogging a bit more about it as we get closer to the festival but for now Like us on https://www.facebook.com/MightyCraicShow and Follow us at https://twitter.com/MightyCraicShow for updates and details!

TDMTLTUT: Jem

As it has been announced today that Jem will be made into a live action movie I thought it was high time that I finally dedicate a They Don't Make Them Like They Used To article to it's excellent theme song. Of course, it makes perfect sense that the theme tune is 43 seconds of the catchiest pop considering that the whole show is about a pop band called Jem & The Holograms.

Jem's real name is Jerrica Benton (nope, that's not a typo, it's Jerrica) and she's the owner of her own record label but when she's not being a pretty boss role model she's also wearing a pink wig and some crazy glam make-up as the lead-singer of her chart-topping band.

The Misfits
It's not all good times though, close on her heels is the kinda-punk-looking-but-mostly-pop rivals The Misfits (no relation) who try to upstage Jem and her Holograms but also kinda kill them(?). It's weird but the line is slightly blurred concerning what their end-game is. They don't like each other, that's for sure.

As a side note: I think they missed a trick by not spelling it The Missfits. I'm a sucker for puns.

Of course things are a lot more complicated than my description of the show. It was a cartoon from the late 80s, they're all mad as fuck. It ran for 3 seasons which is better than some of the other cartoons we've covered here so it had plenty of time to really get weird in those 65 episodes. There was orphans and futuristic technology and kidnappings... Katy Perry doesn't have to deal with that shit!

To be honest the premise of Jem is rife for use again today so I'm kinda shocked it has taken Hollywood this long to reboot it. I just hope they somehow keep this cracker of a tune...

NeedCoffee.com's improvisational panel show SOLVE THIS! is back with the live taping from Dragon Con 2013.

I love this show, I love doing it, and after winning the inaugural live performance the year before I was determined to repeat the act for the second one.

Join me, JJ Hawkins, Jon Boutelle, and Rox of Spazhouse as our host Widget Walls bombards us with problems to solve.

A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Radinkydonk

Ken Plume has done over 300 "Bit of a Chat"s and recently some of his previous guests, including myself, have been bullying him into a roundtable chat with us. He resisted for months but we finally broke him down.

Featuring (along with me and Ken) is Hal Lublin, Molly Lewis, Ben Soileau, and Paul Sabourin. We talked, sometimes all at once, for approximately 4 hours. I dare you to listen all the way to the end. I mean, we spend at least 30 minutes looking at baby photos of each-other for gods sake, its like we're challenging you not to hate us.

Tease Me, Baby! – Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

NOTE: This article was originally published by me on TheWebsiteofDOOM.com

9 years after the release of Sin City we finally see the long expected sequel. Much like the first film, A Dame To Kill For will be a collection of a few different Sin City stories. Frank Miller, the comic's creator, co-directs with Robert Rodriguez and most of the cast return.

I say "most" because there are a couple of changes. Obviously there are some new characters and some characters who don't return, such is the nature of this anthology series. There are some roles that have been re-cast though. Miho is no longer portrayed by Devon Aoki and is now played by Jamie Chung for reasons I'm not really aware of. Dwight was played by Clive Owens and is now Josh Brolin but that re-casting makes more sense if you're familiar with the story (no spoilers).

With so long between movies it will be hard to recapture the magic and originality of the original in the eyes of the public. They've got their work cut out for them to get people hyped again. Lets see if this trailer can do that.

Comics: Three

Last week Kieron Gillen, Ryan Kelly, and Jordie Bellaire's Three came to a close. From the outset, Gillen would describe his story as the opposite of Frank Miller's 300 both literally and spiritually. In Miller's tale it's 300 Spartans versus the might of the Persian Empire. In Gillen's story it's one Helot slave versus 300 of Sparta's finest. Miller glorified the machismo and bravery of the Spartans while Gillen aimed to highlight the hypocrisy and desperation of its end while spotlighting their slaves.
