My Favourite Things: September 2012

NOTE: This article was originally published by me on ASiteCalledFRED.com

Phew! September has been a wild one. I've been running around like a headless chicken for the majority of this month. But, I've been lucky enough to perform on stage in front of hundreds of geeks at Dragon*Con and will soon be in a play in Dublin so it's all a good sort of stress.

Don't worry, I know you didn't come here to hear about my life, you want internet fun things! My list for this month starts...... NOW!

1) Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)

For fans of Flight Of The Conchords the New Zealand Red Nose Day this year was an extra special event as it saw the semi-return of the band. They have been very quiet lately, with them both doing seperate projects, but they decided to help the charity event by contributing a song. The lyrics of which, were crowdsourced from some very cute kids.

You can see the song, plus the damn funny creation of it, by watching the video below.

I particularly love the awkward moment when the new Muppets movie comes up in conversation.

This is why I'm on Twitter

It's also why I go to Dragon*Con every year and meet such awesome people.

Tease Me, Baby! – Wreck-It Ralph

NOTE: This article was originally published by me on TheWebsiteOfDOOM.com

Wreck-It Ralph is a movie that gained a ridiculous amount of online attention from one screen shot. You know the one, with all the video game characters sitting in a circle for group therapy (It's below the video if you really never saw it). As nerds everywhere spasmed at the possibility of seeing all these characters in one movie, Disney rubbed their grubby hands with glee at the possible box-office return.

Underneath all that, what is this film actually about? Well is seems that a fictional character named Wreck-It Ralph has grown tired of being the villain of his game and decides he's better suited to being a hero and tries to follow this aspiration. Sounds good and has endless possibilities attached to a story like that so count me in.

The old question needs to be asked, though. Will the movie be any good? Well, our first hint is always in the trailer so lets watch it now...

Hmmm. Let's dive straight in:

Aaron's WWEport - Night Of Ponderings

NOTE: This article was originally published by me on TheWebsiteOfDoom.com

Another Monday, another Pay-Per-View event under our belts. Last night saw the WWE host their Night of Champions event and without giving any spoilers away, it was OK. Nothing spectacular but some good matches and nobody went to hospital (get well soon, Jerry).

As I watched I realised there were a few things I'd like to mention today and they're just general musings on what the WWE are and could be doing. While these are my random thoughts, they will contain some info on last night's happenings so if you haven't watched the show yet, come back after you have!

- Heel Commentators

After Jerry Lawler's recent heart attack live on air, there has been a massive out-pouring of sympathy... for Michael Cole. Jerry too but it's most interesting to see that everyone has taken a shine to the usually hated Cole.

Michael gave a professional performance during understandably tough times last week on RAW and has rightly be receiving praise for it. He has appeared on news networks talking about the issue and correctly dropped the heel angle while doing so.

I was unsure whether or not the heel character would return for last night's show but it seems my answer came in an unexpected form.

Weekend Justice #171: Drunk at the Trader Joe's. Again.

It's our first Weekend Justice back after Dragon*Con and it's noticeably shorter. Why? Because we spent half our time talking about behind-the-scenes stuff at the Con and had to cut it all out. It's still longer than your average podcast though, so don't worry. I even fell asleep on the call at the end after I gave my recommendations. That's right, I did a Leigh.

This week I join Widge, Jon, Rox, Leigh, Serv, Rob, and Tuffley. We discuss such madness as:

  • Serv assembles...stuff...and checks different things out
  • Dragon*Con debrief
  • Inexplicable Grimm outburst!
  • Rox and the real gypsy
  • Zombie Mister Rogers
  • Aaron Poole, Sherlock and drinking. Bitches.
  • Aaron, wannabe denizen of Newark and online whore
  • Tongo Hiti status
  • Dragon*Con Parade fun
  • The revenge of Fairy Muff
  • Aaron Poole Band Names
  • G4 channel RIP
  • Twitter vs. Steven Moffat
  • New Doctor Who

The Drive In Of Doom - X-Men

The comic book movie commentary series featuring myself and wingman JJ Hawkins continues with Bryan Singer's incredibly influential first installment. Starring Logans and Magnetos and baldies, oh my!

We recorded this one just before we left for Dragon*Con.

As with most of these we have devised a drinking game for anyone playing at home. This time we feel you should take a shot every time I manage to make a compliment about James Marsden. That's right.

Mars Needs Podcasts #177 - Lost At Dragon Con

YO! The first of our Dragon*Con material has made it to the internet. Coincidentally it's also the first thing that happened at Dragon*Con completely!

At 10am Friday morning the lovely but hungover trio (although possibly it was just me hungover) of myself, JJ Hawkins, and Jon Boutelle took to the stage and conversed with a lovely crowd about the TV show LOST.

Despite my frazzled state and the ungodly hour of the morning we manage to have a lovely chat with the crowd about our favourite moments of the show, magic, and weird physics. We're also joined briefly by the Dennis Miller talking doll who manages to upstage us.

Dennis Miller at Dragon*Con

For some reason, only known by Guy Hutchinson himself, I was sent a Dennis Miller talking doll to parade around Dragon*Con. If you're unfamiliar with why a Dennis Miller doll exists, get in line, but Dana Snyder was selling it on eBay and Guy thought it would be funny to buy it and send it on adventures.

I agreed to accept this challenge and so this is the photographic evidence:-

On Friday we had the FRED panel which consisted of me, Ken Plume, and most of Ken's friends at the Con. You can see here how Alex Day, Joseph Scrimshaw, and Ken all try to ignore Dennis crashing the panel.

Next was the FRED Doctor Who panel where me, Ken, Joseph, and Molly Lewis gabbed about the show. By this point Ken felt that Dennis' presence at the panel needed explaining as Mr Miller is not a timelord.

So this is me trying to explain to the Doctor Who fans why a mildly racist talking doll was sitting on stage with us. To prove my mildly racist claim, I played some of Dennis' audio to the crowd... We were lucky to make it out of there alive.

Dennis' racist jokes were making a bit of a stir and later on Doc Hammer needed to have a listen for himself.

Ken Plume wanted to thank you himself for unleashing the beast upon us. Can't you see the happiness in his eyes?

Excellent photobombing skills by Molly Lewis here

Because of Dennis' outrageous rants we decided to leave him back stage at the big Gonzo Quiz Show, where he got to grips with our drinks table.

Maybe he got too familiar with the drinks as we later found him getting a bit over exhuberant with our bottle of Cabin Fever whisky.

The ladies were none too pleased so they decided to de-pants Mr Miller in order to shame him for the naughty boy that he is...

@DalekEmpress is the mistress in question

...only to find a little message from our tormentor himself.

Post Dragon*Con and Post Decent Night Sleep

Thought I should post a quick update now that I'm home from Atlanta and have at least one full night's sleep under my belt. I shall write this in the form of a letter to the event itself because I don't think my brain can handle more than that right now.

Oh, and don't worry Guy, your Dennis Miller update is coming soon.

Dear Dragon*Con,
I love you. Lets make out.
Too strong? Sorry. It's just that I've been with you for 5 years now and every time we get together my life somehow gets better and better. You make me happy in a way other Cons just can't. You've introduced friends into my life that I hope I will never lose and given me the confidence to do things I thought I would never get the chance to do. You've given me opportunities to perform in front of hundreds of people and luckily you draw the type of people who will laugh at my jokes.
So, seriously Dragon*Con, lets kiss with tongues. I'll promiss not to give you Con-Crud.
