My Favourite Things: August 2012

NOTE: This article was originally posted by me on ASiteCalledFRED.com

Hello my lovelies. I'm in particularly good form at the moment as I'm about to travel to Atlanta for my 5th Dragon*Con. Both myself and Ken will be there regaling you with panels and such so do please join us.

In the meantime, why not take a perusal at the things that particularly tickled me this month online.

1) Bad Song Made Good

Listen, we're all sick of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe". Even if the internet didn't manage to kill it with memes and parodies, the amount of radio play it received alone would have made it the ear-worm to make you commit suicide.

But you know what? Bad things can get better. And if you get The Roots and Jimmy Fallon together with a bunch of classroom instruments to cover the song, it just becomes amazing, no matter how bad it originally was. So here, enjoy the best version of this song you'll ever hear.

Dragon*Con Schedule

We're 10 days out from the event and today is the first day I've been able to compile any kind of concrete list of the panels I will be appearing on at the convention. It's a crazy weekend and the trouble getting a firm lock on everything in the weeks leading up to it is a sign of the madness you're in for.

Like last year, I don't think I could possibly do any more at the con, my line-up for the weekend is so packed but this year I'm doing more behind the scenes stuff than on-stage. As ever, things could change and I might be able to squeeze my way on to one or two more but for now this is a list of the panels/events I am CERTAIN to be on. So if you want to come see me perform/chat/have a good time, then these times and places are where you'll find me.

FRIDAY:-

Title: Lost: Greatest Moments and Greatest Puzzles
Description: A fandom discussion with Aaron Poole, Jon Boutelle, and JJ Hawkins of some of the greatest moments and the greatest puzzles (resolved and not) from Lost.
My Description: If I could claim anything at the convention is my baby, it would be this panel. This is my third LOST panel and last year we were the only LOST panel (possibly this year too). We had a packed room and I love every single person who came (you can see a picture of them here). Considering the time, I'll love every single person who comes this year too.
Time: 10:00am
Location: M106-107 - Marriott
(Length: 1 Hour)

Title: FRED Entertainment Panel-Palooza-Extrava-Thingee-a-Doodle
Description: Ken Plume welcomes special guests & an Irishman for a panel that really only exists for the sake of frolicking, bantering, and geeking about.
My Description: This is always an ill advised idea. Myself and Ken have spent a couple of years now doing this rather miscellaneous panel. It's essentially going to be us playing some games with the audience and talking utter bollocks. We've ended previous years with a song... LIKE THIS.
Time: 01:00 pm
Location: Valdosta - Sheraton
(Length: 1 Hour)

Title: The NeedCoffee Fun Fest
Description: Games, prizes and hijinks! The NeedCoffee Staff start your Con off right. You never know—there may be another green pegasus
My Description: I'm hosting a game of Blankety Blank and will be playing about with the rest of the guys. It's over 2 hours of ludicrous game shows and prizes with lots of crowd participation. Great way to spend your Friday night.
Time: 08:30 pm
Location: International North - Hyatt
(Length: 2.5 Hours)

SATURDAY:-

Title: BritPop: Music From Across The Pond
My Description: Myself and the guys from NeedCoffee essentially chat about British music. I had a lot of fun on this one last year so looking forward to chatting again. Plus, I'm such a novelty on it as the person who lives in Europe.
Time: 02:30 pm
Location: Macon - Sheraton
(Length: 1 Hour)

Title: Gonzoroo II
Description: Join Ken Plume as he hosts an evening of musical and comedic delights, including Molly Lewis, Marian Call, & surprises galore!
My Description: One of the surprises? I'm not really doing anything on stage at this, I'm just helping out backstage. BUT I feel I must mention it here because it will be awesome and I love all the folks involved so if nothing else I'm recommending it because I'll be there... just not performing.
Time: 08:30 pm
Location: Atrium Ballroom - Marriott
(Length: 2.5 Hours)

SUNDAY:-

Title: FRED Entertainment Presents Yet Another Panel About Dr Who
Description: Ken Plume & guests rant, rave, giggle & titter about all things DW as only enthusiastic, opinionated & reasonably well-informed geeks can hope to do.
My Description: I had a groovy time on this last year. Me, Ken, and Molly Lewis will definitely be there, plus who-ever else we get to show up. Who... ever else. Get it?!
Time: 11:30 am
Location: Atlanta Ballroom - Westin
(Length: 1 Hour)

Title: Solve This! Live
Description: The improvisational panel game that has solved problems for millions worldwide will now solve problems for you live and on stage for the first time!
My Description: I'm super excited for this. It's our first ever live performance of the improv comedy show and I consider the show my baby, so please come and laugh at our hijinks.
Time: 05:30 pm
Location: Atlanta Ballroom - Westin
(Length: 1 Hour)

Title: Gonzo Quiz Show IV: The Quest For Quiz
Description: Join teams of celebrity guests as they are led through a series of panel show games by your host, Ken Plume.
My Description: I'm playing quite possibly the smallest part imaginable in this event. I'm essentially pressing play on an iPod from time to time. BUT much like the concert on Saturday night, this will be just too good for you not to see. The panel show is always a laugh riot and an essential part of anyone's weekend. So go there.
Time: 07:00 pm
Location: Atlanta Ballroom - Westin
(Length: 2.5 Hours)

MONDAY:-

Title: Make the Bad Men Stop, The Sequel
My Description: This is the second MtBMS panel of the weekend and while you can still expect talk of how Hollywood ruins every book/TV show/comic/etc you love, you can also expect a clusterfuck of epic proportions as we're al fried after the Con weekend.
Time:  02:30 pm
Location: M106 - M107 - Marriott
(Length: 1 Hour)

Remember folks, this list is tentative and sure to be updated again before the convention begins.

Cabin Fever #115: Stormin’ Mormon

We at Cabin Fever have become known for certain segments that we would have on our show. You Put What Where? being a popular example. I think for us, as hosts, our favourite to do has been the Taste Tests. The reasons why are pretty obvious, we get sent free food from around the world and get to eat instead of yap.

Sure, some of the food we've been sent has been hidious. We don't always agree about what is disgusting, for example I get sick to even think about the dried seaweed we tried but Brian quite liked it, but nevertheless we've both had stuff we'll never try again.

This time we got sent some treats from Utah and while we mostly agree that it was nice, there are some nasty moments in there too. To find out what we tried, you'll just have to listen!

The Drive In Of Doom - Batman Begins

The comic-book-movie-commentary is back. This month's rather epic movie choice is Batman Begins (in no way due to The Dark Knight Rises being released in cinemas, we wouldn't try to piggyback some interest off that, no way, not us).

Once again myself and JJ Hawkins try to find things to say about the movie other than "it's good!" and we find a drinking game in doing our best Batman impressions. Be careful, this game will get you seriously drunk! So swear to me you'll be careful... SWEAR TO ME!

Ridiculous Purchase of the Day

We are now less than 30 days away from the big event, Dragon*Con 2012, can you believe it? One of my favourite guests ever to meet at the convention has to be the immensely wonderful Sylvester McCoy. Not only was he the 7th Doctor Who (the one of my youth) but also he will be Radagast the Brown in the new Hobbit movies about to be released.

Here is a picture of me with the man himself after he gave a hilarious performance at the Gonzo Panel Show last year.

He also was front row centre, heckling me at my karaoke performance the night before too. I was shocked to see him later on at the karaoke night singing along to someone's Green Day rendition and dancing along to Rage Against The Machine too. Truly a man with many interests!

So you see, I'm so excited to see him again at this year's Con that when I saw this on sale in the comic book store today... I just had to pick it up!

Indeed, here is the cheeky blighter on my shelf now. The TARDIS makes whooshing noises and everything! Well worth the cash.
